Alien vs. Predator: Reqiuem (2007)

This movie continues from where it stopped. A fusion between the Alien and the Predator has broken out of a carcass of a Predator. This fusion is called a PredAlien and it has escaped onto a capsule for earth. It attacks a local community and wreaks havoc on the local populace.

Why? Why did this movie fail more than its predecessor? Well I am going to be blunt that I was expecting this PredAlien to cause immense destruction, but I could barely see it in the dark and on other occasions, it takes its time. Most of the scenes in this movie were shot in darkness and were only visible if viewed with the Predator's infrared lighting or with external light sources.

Just the usual nonsense, the humans take up a large fraction of running time. We have to watch the human characters go through their own side stories, which I know nobody gives a toss about. This wastes time and brings this movie to boredom. Again, I wanted the Predator and the PredAlien to dominate the screens, not these humans.

Remember the last time where at least three "teenage" Predators were on the hunt? Well, this time there is only one Predator containing this rampage and destroying any evidence lying around connected to such. How cheap can these film makers get?

And what can I say about the noises in this movie? Imagine you are in the cinema and various pitches of noise pierce your ears. You would be writhing in pain, tempted to walk out before your hearing is diminished. Noise after noise without giving it a break, just leaves constant reverberations in the head! Ouch!

If there is one thing I hate in this movie, it is a scene where a pregnant woman is subjected by the PredAlien. This scene demonstrates how far the writers have gone to think of something terrible. Watching several Aliens hatch inside her abdomen leaves me writhing in agony. So this PredAlien can do what it did above: bypass the life cycle and just have Aliens hatch inside its subject. I think I might lose my appetite.

So this movie is just another waste of money. It is targeted at a young audience and relinquishes the violence of its predecessors. It suffers from an ensemble of cardboard characters, poor lighting, excessively loud sound effects and lack of excitement. I would not even encourage anyone to look for this as much as I would the previous installment. Overall, this movie sucks big time.

Predators (2010)

It has been twenty years since Predator 2, and a few years after the AVP series. Film makers concluded that they had to look into the most successful movie Predator and understand how it succeeded both critically and financially. So in this film we have a wide range of new faces, who have been dropped into a jungle on an alien planet; each one of different categories, all a subject on a game reserve. The plot is that they have to fight for their survival and find a way off this alien world. The hunters have become the hunted.

This movie does what the very first movie did: we do not see the predators just yet until the right moment. In that while we learn the attribute of each character: most of them are dangerous to an untrained eye, but only one is subtly dangerous. This is why the film title has a double meaning: Predators here not only refers to the aliens in question, but also to the humans of violent tendencies. Isabelle makes mention of the fact that they have been chosen because they are violent in their own ways and according to their cultures.

So this film opens up and suddenly we see a man falling. I would admit this to be sudden. His name is Royce, but he does not bother to mention it to anyone before the end of this film. So why does he not tell everyone his name earlier? It is possible that on earth he is a veteran soldier whom no one bothered to acknowledge. He was an assassin and is expendable. It is hard to explain but he is hardened and shows little or no regard for human life. Now that is what makes him a monster.
Several others drop in, and do so while unaware before deploying their parachutes. They were in different circumstances prior to being abducted. As was revealed in Predator 2, the aliens are drawn to heats of conflict; so the predators handpicked these mercenaries from these areas.

So the Predators have a spirit for hunting. They must have concluded that the earth is such a dangerous cesspit that rather than hunt there, they turn the tide and have the humans on a safari trip. Here we see them use their own breed of hunting "dogs" to test the capabilities of the humans. Of course whoever has a powerful firearm survives, if their ammunition are sufficient. They observe their targets, just as if this was a scientific experiment. The Predators may as well be scientists as well as hunters.

This movie is full of expositions; those under the topics of hunting, trapping and cultures. A few are relatively longer than the rest, but these are mostly due to the reason they were chosen in the first place. We learn the modes and methods adopted in killing and such like; how these Predators adopted them and how they can be averted.

One famous scene from the first movie is where an array of traps was set off as a last stand against the Predators. This occurred near the beginning rather than the end, and so felt somewhat out of place. It is still baffling that it had not been set off by the aliens themselves but considering the last events, these aliens learned to never underestimate humans. Isabelle recalled the ordeals faced by a soldier who first encountered the alien and detailed his stance against him. So it is possible that the American learned this log from the veteran.

If there is one character to look out for, it is Ronald Noland (Lawrence Fishburne). He has been on the planet for who-knows-how-long. He himself has learned a thing or two about the hunters and their feuds, while salvaging whatever he can to survive. He must have the spirit to adapt wherever he can, having been away from earth for a long time. But at the end he showed no qualm of being decapitated by his adversary, after a short appearance on screen. It was disappointing that he did not bother to help everyone off the planet. He was also pretty weird as he talks to his imaginary friend frequently. I got lost for words while observing his somewhat bizarre character, but I can be sure it is because he has been alone for a very long time.

Speaking of which, Isabelle admitted that she and her "allies" were monsters in their own world and were unworthy of returning to earth. So if they all made it back to earth, what were their plans? Unsurprisingly one of them, FBI's most wanted felon, was going to "rape a lot of women" (not his exact world!). This is the mind of a monster who shows that he is what he is and people of this sort do not deserve to be on earth. The others who were in the middle of their respective conflicts would have no need of returning if they were going to die there anyway, just like that American soldier who was due for tour in Afghanistan. This guy is a prime example of a mercenary who would be better off dead on this alien world than in the war on earth.

In fact this felon is the most annoying of them all: he has no gun and is vulnerable to any attack. At the beginning he is fighting with an African mercenary for no apparent reason whatsoever. He is more than worthy of taking the fall.

So shot on a real forest, this movie attempts to illustrate a lush habitat on an alien planet where the climate widely differs from the earth's. There are plants there that look similar to the species on earth, as one doctor pointed out. In fact, it is possible that while on earth a predator sampled every plant species and brought it to this planet to cultivate and create a feeling close to home. As I recall, these Predators must have taken a new turn to understanding human behavior.

Despite the cardboard characters, expositions and lesser violence, this movie replicates the writing and score of its 1987 predecessor by taking the hunting game back to the jungle, except this time on an alien planet. This movie also pays tribute to the very first movie by putting up traps that were erected by an American soldier before his death, recounting the encounter with another Predator by other military personnel, and by setting up a showdown which was similar to that one in the past. We also witness a blood feud between different Predators, which compensates for a lack of bloody violence; not to mention the true colors of a doctor among the group.

The A-Team (2010)

Here is a movie based on a television series of the same name. There are four guys who form a unit: Colonel Hannibal Smith, Bosco B.A. Baracus, Lt. Faceman Peck, and Captain H.M. Murdock. Together, they are the A-Team. They are renowned for planning ahead and executing their actions at precise moments of their missions. But they are also renowned for their crazy antics in carrying out their assignments. Speaking of which, there are several  fight scenes where the laws of physics are overlooked, to the point where little strikes result in large impacts on objects.

These guys will blow your mind with their taste for danger and adventure. They are just the same in terms of never giving it a break when they are pursuing their adversary, or when the reverse occurs. Baracus loves his van so much he treats it like a woman. Does he even have a real woman to begin with? Faceman is cocky and profane: he just does not seem to be bothered by any predicament he finds himself in, because he knows that his comrades have his back. Murdock is mentally unstable, but can still fly a helicopter! I really think that none of his comrades were willing to take the chance with him flying the machine, yet he flies it anywhere. Hannibal, the leader of the gang, loves it when it all comes together. Oh by the way, let's see Faceman kiss a woman after puking and not rinsing his mouth; Hannibal shoot at Baracus' arm for no apparent reason. I'm pretty sure these guys are as smart as teenage boys who long for senseless action. And did I forget to mention Baracus has "Pity" tattooed on his left knuckles, and "Fool" on his right? I guess he was trying to pose as a Mr. T spoof, which he fails to do as he cries like a baby at the destruction of his van.

So the story revolves around stamping down on the printing of American money outside of the US. They must retrieve the plates, and apprehend the mastermind in Iraq. Apparently, the A-Team has no authority to intervene in this operation, but nonetheless partake in this adventure.

You will notice that every time Hannibal issues instructions to his comrades, it is as if he narrating the sequence of events. This gives the impression that everything goes according to his intended plan, even though there is likely to be a hitch in the scheme. Nonetheless, it all goes according to plan. Unrealistic. You know, vandalizing and stealing people's property should attract suspicion from them and result in sanctions. But no, these guys think that nothing can go wrong at all. So watch them cause immense damage to containers and vehicles on a stretch of road without getting hurt on any circumstance.

But immediately after Hannibal's favorite tagline, an explosion occurs in the container containing piles of dollar notes. Guess he spoke too soon and that line must be not so lucky. The gang find out that their rivals were present at the time of the explosion, leading up to a conclusion that they were framed. They discover that General Russell Morrison was involved in this botched operation and blown up. Each and every one of the comrades are court-marshaled and discharged dishonorably. Now they have to break out and clear their names, and finish their mission.

As usual there must be a series of comical instances during the prison escapes, notably in this one scene where mental patients were heavily convinced that a truck plowing into a wall was three-dimensional.  It is surprising that the truck was able to plow into the very exact spot at the same time as the movie projection, with no screen hanging on the wall. One would wonder if this writing is in line with reality.

By the way, this movie incorporates CGI in a few scenes, including one involving a tank being bombarded by unmanned drones, and another involving containers being inundated with over-the-top action scenes. I can never imagine a tank of immense weight being sustained by three parachutes. And do watch out for shaky camera movements accompanied by "flying the tank" in midair. This scene ends with a man throwing dynamite into a river, being killed by a tank; his wife delighting in that. Is she really that cold?

So this movie takes it time to round up on this plot. These guys have to outsmart a female character played by Jessica Biel. She shows how serious she can get when tracking a pack of troublemakers on the run from the law. She poses as a threat to the guys as she can not be talked into by any of these guys, nor can she be negotiated with. She needs more conviction to break.

I would rather sum this up as a movie where boys will be boys. If you like corny dialogue, over-the-top action, a convoluted plot and abundant humor, watch this flick. I have never watched the TV series on which this movie is based, but as a movie it has its moments.

The Heat (2013)

Well, What do we have here? An FBI agent Sarah Ashburn and Detective Shannon Mullens, who each operate on antagonistic ideologies of law enforcement. Ashburn operates on discipline while Mullens operates on hostility. They cross each other's paths when they are on a hunt for a faceless mastermind known as Larkin. They do not appreciate each other and often end up on the wrong end. While Mullens throws all sorts of curses around, Ashburn restrains herself from doing so as much as she can.

This movie focuses on women and their roles in law enforcement, their personal life, and even misogyny. These two characters start off as an odd couple, but soon learn more about each other and see how to change that for the better. Ashburn is a nerdy woman, who looks like she has no life to enjoy. Mullens, on the other hand, looks more like the type who is not afraid to express herself. On their assignment they get into scuffles and frolics, all to give us something to laugh about. Then they run into the DEA, one of whose agent is an albino. Now this albino relents at nothing when it comes to chastising women; he shows his disdain towards them when the two almost blunder the case. He revs it up without pausing or choking, delivering so much humor that it is difficult to contain oneself. He himself is dealt with albino prejudice as a counterattack from Mullens.

Taking down Larkin would have been a tedious task if not for some middlemen. Mullens shows no letting up in ranting and cursing like a mentally challenged patient. It is annoying to some, hilarious to others. Marlon Wayans makes it into this movie, but does not make a fool of himself as a black stereotype from previous movies like Chris Tucker; all he does is show professional approach, and keep his cool while tying to be amicable. He leaves all that comical aura to the other guys.

You may love it or hate it, but this crime-themed action comedy must keep you occupied. It is a blast. It is a fun-filled ride you cannot afford to miss. Watch it and you will rate it favorably. 6.8/10
